Black farmer groundings symposium

The Black Farmer Groundings symposium emerged from work done by Dr. Marsha Myrie as part of Dr. Andria Jones’s research on climate mental health research with equity-deserving farmers in Canada. The Symposium created space for dialogue on resilience, belonging, and food sovereignty. Participants emphasized that Black food sovereignty is not a new vision to be built, but a legacy of knowledge, relationships, and practices to be remembered, reclaimed, and supported. These visual summaries captures key reflections on community, land stewardship, and the structural changes needed to empower Black farmers and strengthen more just and inclusive food systems.

I created this illustration to use as an anchoring visual for the Symposium, based on conversations and inspiration from Dr. Myrie around Black food sovereignty, land dispossession, and the centrality of food and farming to Black cultures.
